Anna & Alex’s much anticipated wedding day at the Tithe barn in Symondsbury Estate in Dorset came at the end of August on another very warm sunny day. Following on from our pre-wedding meet up at Chesil beach to do some family portraits. I know the venue at Symondsbury very well from shooting a few weddings there and what I really like about it is that they provide a beautiful location that couples can customise to their own personal theme and no day is the same - always personalised.
As I shoot more weddings over the 12 years I’ve been a wedding photographer, technique is obviously essential to capture really good quality images that will stand the test of time for each couple and their families, but what has become even more important is learning about my couples as people, this is what can take good images to become great images in their eyes - which is all that matters. The best memories are the most personal ones.
The emotional impact of pure documentary is undeniable, but sometimes in the pursuit of creativity and purist approaches, the simple images can be looked over. Anna & Alex’s day was just full of emotion, good feelings and really special moments and beautiful details. However from meeting up with them previously I knew the importance of their family, this is everything they are about. Very selfless and loving people. So at some point in the day I knew in this location we would be able to do a classic portrait of them and their young family.
This is a moment that needs no artistic angle, just a time to stop, gather together and very simply framed I got a classic portrait in black and white. This is the image that I took home with me with the thousands of others, knowing that all the meaning of the day was in that image.
Here are some moments from Anna & Alex’s very special wedding day.
